Google’s Doodle for our Milk Man – Verghese Kurien

Google India has dedicated today’s doodle to our own Milk Man, Verghese Kurien – today, on 26th November, is the birth anniversary of Mr. Kurien. He is best known for his Operation Flood wherein he brought Milk production revolution in India. The success of this operation gave him the title of ‘Father of White Revolution’. Operation Flood’s success was so big that it made Milk Industry the biggest self-sustained industry of that time.

Verghese Kurien was born in Kozikhode on 26th November, 1921. He was born in a Syrian family and he graduated to become Mechanical Engineer.

Here are some more interesting fact which you may not have known:


Verghese Kurien wanted to leave his first job the Government  in Anand, Gujarat mid-way.

He had to do this job to serve his bond signed against the scholarship he received for higher studies in USA. It was Tribhuvandas Patel who convinced to change his mind and later Verghese Kurien dedicated his life to Anand and Anand’s farmers.

Verghese Kurien created total of 30 successful organizations including GCMMF (Amul)

We all know only about AMUL brand that he created. But what we do not know is that he had created 30 organizations including – NDDB (National Dairy Development Board), IRMA (Institute of Rural Management) – the MBA College, etc.

The Milk Revolution was created with Buffalo’s milk, whereas other countries were producing Cow milk at that time

Under Verghese Kurien, Dailry expert H.M Dalaya had discovered a way to convert buffalo milk (which was available in abundace in Inida) to Milk Powder. Whereas, other countries were mostly producing Cow Milk for consumption.

‘Manthan’, a Shyam Benegal movie on Milk Revolution, was funded by farmers working with Verghese Kurien

Each farmer had contributed Rs. 2 as a token to fund the movie. The movie was a big hit and also won some national awards. The same movie was also used by UNDP to start co-operative movements in Latin America. That was the reach of this movement.

Verghese Kurien has won Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri and Ramon Magsaysay awards

With his life dedicated to India’s farmers and milk production in India, Verghese has done many great works. And for that he has received almost all top awards Indian Government gives.
